Brian
Michael Page
(b. July 1, 1964 in Woonsocket, RI) came on board at Holy Ghost Church
in Tiverton, RI, in
October of 2004. His intention was to fulfill Fr. Finelli's
request to implement a music program that consists of true Catholic
sacred music, utilizing traditional hymnody, restoring Gregorian Chant
to pride of place, restoring the use of the Latin language, the
official language of the Church, and to build a choir to enhance the
people's prayer, as opposed to mere "performance".
In addition to nearly 2-1/2 decades of parish work, Brian has spent
over two decades as a composer of sacred music.
Unfortunately, a mill fire spread through his neighborhood
and destroyed his home, and 16 others. The end result is that
all his compositions, both in soft and hard copy, were lost.
The re-writing process is in continuation. Some has
been restored. Some will be (in his words) "deep-sixed", and
new compositions are also being written. Thus, this website
will continue to grow, and grow, and grow, as time goes on.
The music written by Brian Michael Page is usually in the "cathedral
style", that is, intended to be accompanied by the organ. Many
forms of the "cathedral style" exist in his writings - chant-style,
standard SATB metrical hymnody and choral work, and even the dissonant
harmonies inspired by composers like Richard Proulx and Alexander
Peloquin. Some pieces may also include adaptations from standard
hymn tunes. Some scores also include additional classical
instruments, like brass and timpani, or string quartet, or even harp.
On rare occasions, a classical guitar part may even exist.
One series that Brian will be giving the most attention at this time
will be his new SING THE MASS! Series, in hopes
that congregations and choirs will not just sing AT Mass, but to SING
THE MASS! This new series will consist of the Ordinary and Proper of the Mass, as well as hymns that are based on the Propers.
Brian graduated from Cumberland (RI) High School, class of 1982.
In addition to the 120-voice chorus at the high school, he
sang
in the select offshoot of that chorus, called the "Clef Singers".
In his junior and senior years, he auditioned and made it to
the
Rhode Island Music Educators Association All-State Chorus. He
went on to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, 1982-84, and
studied organ with Kevin Valentine in 1987.
Brian makes his home with his wife, Ann, and four children,
Christopher, Jessica, Brian Robert, and Brittany, and their cat
"Princess". E-mail the composer
